Nupa dance is a variation of Pung Cholom. It is known by other names too such as Cymbal dance or Kartal Cholom. Generally, nupa dance is performed as a prologue to the Ras Leels but it is performed individually too. Nupa dance performance is associated with religious rites.
Nupa dance performance
Nupa dance performance starts with slow momentum but it picks up the beat as the dance continues. Dancers use cymbals as a prop while they dance. The dance is accompanied by an ancient classical drum called ‘Pung” in Manipuri. Pung is the main instrument of the dance.
Nupa dance is performed by only male dancers. They dance in a group or as partners.
Dance costume
Costume of nupa dance is different than other dances. In this dance male dancers wear a uniquely made ball-shaped white turban. Other than turban they wear traditional clothing. For the bottom dancers wear a white dhoti called Pheijom.
