The northwest state of Punjab is known for its popular traditional folk dance Bhangra. The energy and fun associated with Bhangra have made it famous all over the subcontinent.
The Bhangra music and dance originated in the mid 20th century in the Sialkot region. In modern times, the Bhangra dance form has been modified and has a Western influence on it. However, the real essence of this dance form persists and is every bit fun.
Bhangra Dance Performance
Bhangra is part of the Baisakhi festival celebrated in the harvest period of the spring season in India. The main crop harvested in this season is called bhang. It is this plant from which the folk dance gets the name Bhangra.
Bhangra is primarily a dance of the men. It is performed for entertainment purposes during the Baisakhi festival and even on special occasions like marriages. Nowadays, both men and women are seen doing the Bhangra dance, together or in separate groups.
The movements are highly energetic, comprising of vigorous kicking of the feet in the air, high jumps, and bending of the upper body. The men also hold a long stick in one hand and hit it on the ground with the beats of the drum. One interesting sight is the pair dancing, where one man locks his right leg with another man’s right leg, and they both raise their hands and dance on one foot. The dance is a rhythmic one and is performed in groups. Dancers make various formations throughout the dance.
Bhangra is performed with short folk songs called Boliyans. The main musical instrument is the Dhol, played with a unique kind of stick. The entire combination is vibrant and spreads immense joy in the crowd.
Dance Costume
Just like the dance, the costumes worn are bright and catchy. The pagg or the turban is the essential part of the men’s costume. It holds a religious significance among the Sikhs. On the top men wear a long kurta and a contrasting sleeveless jacket. The bottom is covered with a Chadar, a loincloth tied around the waist.
Some dancers are barefoot while others wear the traditional shoe with a pointed tip, called Jutti. The women performers wear colorful salwar suits, with dupatta draped around the hand. All dancers tie a shiny piece of cloth on each wrist. The dress material preferred is silk or satin, as they are shiny and adds to the look.
Music And Instruments
The instruments used during the traditional Bhangra dance include the Dhol, Chimta, and Alghoza. Modern days people play many other instruments to make the music more appealing to the viewers.
