Chandaini Gonda Dance of Chhattisgarh

The state of Chhattisgarh is often known as the Tribal state of India because of the numerous tribes that are found there. Each of these tribes has its own rituals, traditions, and festivities. A lot of these occasions are celebrated by performing regional plays, songs, and dances. One such dance is Chandaini-Gonda.

The Dantewada district of Chhattisgarh is gifted with a rich cultural history, and they display it by means of various plays, folk songs, and folk dances, and Chandaini-Gonda is one of them. This isn’t just a dance form but a complete act that includes dancing, singing, and acting. The main theme of the act is usually mythological, but sometimes they also tell stories about the rich cultural heritage of the region.

Chandaini Gonda Dance Performance

The Chandaini Gonda dance is performed by both male and female members of the community. The dancing part of the act is mainly done by the females while the male performers handle the music and the instruments. The singing act is performed both by males and females depending upon their roles in the play.

Dance Costume

The costumes for these performances are very vivid. The male performers wear Kurta and Pyjamas along with an overcoat and a matching Turban. And the group of female performers wear the same colour sarees and embellish themselves with round medallion necklaces and cummerbunds. In some acts, the costumes of the female performers are beautified by round caps that match the necklace and cummerbund.

The musical instruments used in this performance are mainly Dholak, Mandar, Flute, and Taal.
