Dandiya Ras has its roots in Gujarat. Now, due to its popularity, it is famous all over India. This dance is mainly done in the Navratri season. Men and women gather in one place and dance with two sticks called dandiya. This dance represents both religious and fun aspects.
The dance name has been taken from the instruments that are used while performing it. Dandiya – the sticks in both partner’s hands, and Raas – it is Sanskrit word for feelings and emotions of enjoyment in one’s heart. It is unlikely that this dance is done by a single pair. This dance is done mainly in a group or gathering which makes it more interesting to watch or perform.
Mythology Behind the Dance
In one story it is said that this dance represents the fight between a rakshasa Mahishasura and Goddess Durga. This is the most famous deity-rakshasa battle in Hindu mythology. In the end, Devi overpowered the demon and saved the world.
In another story, it says that this dance represents the love between Radha-Krishna also called Raas Leela which suggested the name Dandiya Raas.
Dandiya Raas Performance
For this dance to be done well, co-ordination between partners must be good. Although Dandiya can not hurt, still it should be performed with care as Dandiyas can hurt if they accidentally hit someone on the eye or another sensitive place. This is why before performing this dance your hands should be good with dandiyas.
When done in groups two circles are made. If both males and females are playing then one circle will be of men and another of women. And if only women are playing then both circles will consist of women. The dance starts with one partner hitting on another partner’s sticks. Later the other partner picks up the beat and starts hitting on the sticks too. Now, they work in coordination and dance together.
Dandiya Raas Costume
Women wear a highly flared skirt, choli (blouse), and dupatta. Men wear either traditionala dandiya dress or kurta pajama. In traditional dandiya dress, men wear a frock-y top and dhoti underneath. All costumes are bright and very colorful. Dandiyas, too, are colored with bright colors and decorated with lace and pom-poms.
Although the true glory of this dance can only be seen in Gujarat, there are other places that hold Dandiya Raas events around Navaratri to let people get a glimpse of what it looks like to be in Gujarat. So if you are in India during Navaratri but unfortunately not in Gujarat you can look for Dandiya Raas and Garba events that are happening near you.
