Google Doodle for 74th Independence Day of India

Google added its own bit in 74th independence day celebrations of India by displaying a vivid iconograph representing the visual and musical artforms of India. Doodles have been a way for the company to celebrate notable events.

The independence day doodle by Mumbai artist Sachin Ghanekar displayed classical musical instruments like veena, bansuri, sarangi, shehnai, and tutari. The artwork comprises six panels each for a letter of ‘google’. Each of these panels showing a musical instrument being played is illustrated in different folk painting styles like Kalamkari Painting, Madhubani Painting, Gond Painting, Phad Painting, Pichwai Painting, and Warli Painting.

Independence day is observed in India on 15th August each year to mark its birth as a free nation. India has always been a cultural leader in the cultural sphere. It has been reclaiming its place rapidly post-independence.  

The panels cleverly displays company name along with showing six different folk painting forms and six different classical music instruments. The doodle displays a kaleidoscopic view into Indian cultural sphere. It is important to note that most of these traditional painting forms have lost traditional patronage because of the rapid industrialization. Similarly the musical instruments has also been losing vogue because of the simpler electronic instruments.

There have been efforts from various NGOs and government authorities to boost these traditional practices. Apart from their cultural importance these forms painting forms and musical instruments provide a livelihood to thousands of artisans across India.
