Lakshadweep has beautiful folk dances that attract millions of tourists from all around the world. Among them, Lava dance is a very popular folk dance. So much so that it is termed as the riot of colors.
The word ‘Lava’ means beautiful dance or rhythmic movement. Lava Dance is usually performed on the festive occasions or religious ceremonies.
Dance Performance
This dance form is mostly performed by the male dancers like Kolkali, another form of folk dance of Lakshadweep. Lava dance is accompanied by folk songs. It is based on passionate, and gracious body postures and movements.
The men line up in pairs or a single line. Then they form a circle altogether. This is how they create a specific pattern for the dance. Then they start to make movements maintaining the spirit of the song.
As for the instrument, some of them carry drums as the Lava dance itself starts with the roaring sound of drums. Constant drumming with the melody of the folk songs creates an amazing atmosphere and enhances the pace and momentum of the dance.
As incredible it may sound, there is a striking resemblance between Lava Dance and Maldive Bileh Dhafi Negun dance of Maldives Island.
Lava Dance Costumes
One of the most attractive parts of Lava dance performance is their dazzling and colorful costumes. The dancers showcase their bright costumes tinted with multiple beautiful hues that enhance the beauty of the performance.
The dance costumes are comprised of mainly bright red trousers with a white scarf tied around the waist and black and white headgear or turban to bring a complete colorful, rich, and vibrant look. Locally this look is known as ‘Bolufeyle‘. It is the most popular dance form in the Minicoy Island of Lakshadweep.
