This dance of joy and excitement is called the Loor dance. While performing this dance the girl is all dressed up in her prettiest clothes and prettiest jewelry. Loor folk dance is considered a medium to express emotions such as joy, excitement, and sadness. It is popular in the Bagar and Bangar regions of Haryana. Loor is done during the month of February and March. This dance also marks the beginning of the spring season. In spring it is time to change the previous crops with spring season crops. Women also perform this dance during Holi and other festivals.
Although the story depicts a woman waiting for her husband. Loor dance is not limited to this. Loor dance starts with the beginning of a girl child’s birth in the family. Soon after she reaches her age her parents are advised to look for a groom. The gifts girl receives from their in-laws and the emotions all are depicted in Loor.
Dance Performance
After this when she leaves her home and goes to a new home there is the joy of having a husband but the pain of leaving her family behind. The Loor dance consists of all these phases and emotions a girl goes through her entire life. The most enchanting part of this dance and song is when the woman asks a pigeon to take her message to her husband. The pigeon comes back with the message of his coming back soon.
When a man is in the army he has no means to talk to his family. He can not message them every day neither can a woman contact him using anything. This is why the girl is imagining a pigeon who can take her message to him and get a message back as well. The dance enchanted the spectators and leave them in years of both joy and sadness.
