Phagua is a dance form popular among the tribes residing in Jharkhand and the adjoining state Bihar. It is performed during Holi – the spring festival. Holi is a huge celebration all over India. In Jharkhand, the people celebrate Holi with Phagua dance performance.
Phagua Dance Performance
Phagua is a highly energetic dance. The dance is performed by men. In some regions, few women are also seen taking part in Phagua. Drumbeats and folk songs are an integral part of the dance.
The dancers throw coloured water and powder on each other as they dance to the music. The men dance freely, making different moves. Professionals or people who are good at dancing are the ones who perform Phagua.
Phagua Dance Attire
The dance is a way to celebrate the festival of colours. The attires are as colourful as the festival. Dancers wear A-line kurtas on the top paired with colourful pants on the bottom. The cloth used is satin and shiny that appeals to the eyes. On the waist, they tie a cloth of a contrasting colour. A turban is also worn to complete the traditional look.
Instruments Used
Music is as important as dance. The dhol, Nagada, dhak, Mandar, Karah, and Murali are used to produce loud beats. A singer loudly sings folk songs to which the dancers move. The entire scene reflects the joy in the hearts of these people during the Holi festival.
