Madhya Pradesh is rich in culture and tradition. Phulpati dance is a beautiful tradition of Madhya Pradesh. It is the main dance form of the Malwa region. The dance celebrates nature and devotes itself to the goddess of nature.
Phulpati is mainly performed by unmarried girls of the state during Holi. Phulpati is not a dance form, only for rural areas. Women from semi-rural areas participate in this dance too.
Phulpati folk dance is associated with the Dashain festival of Madhya Pradesh which is celebrated for fifteen days. The seventh day of the festival is called Phulpati. It is the most auspicious day of the festival. There are rallies during the festival which become a social gathering where people meet each other and greet each other. We see many cultures joining hands together in these rallies.
Phulpati Dance Performance
While performing this dance girls pray that mother nature always keeps their families suffering-free. Women also ask mother nature to help them find their perfect life partner. Girls dance while keeping the grace of a woman. It can be seen in their sophisticated dance movements that they are on the verge of becoming a woman.
Costume
Women dancers wear colourful dhotis along with shirts. They cover their head with a dupatta. Unmarried girls also wear traditional jewellery such as bangles, necklace, mangteeka, chudi, anklet etc.
Since it is a dance for unmarried girls, girls like to dress up very prettily. They put light makeup on their face to bring out their beauty.
Main instrument of Phulpati is Dhol. girls can not stop their feet when they hear the beat of a drum. There are special events organized where one can witness this dance. Or you can go to Madhya Pradesh during the Holi festival to witness it in semi-rural areas.
