Sama Chakwa is a dance performed at the festival of Sama Chakeva or Sama Chakeba. This festival is of Hindu origin and is celebrated in the Mithila Region of the Indian Subcontinent (i.e., Bihar and some parts of Nepal). It is celebrated in November and is set about when the birds begin their migration from the Himalayas to the plains of India.
This festival celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters in the form of folk fares like theatres, plays, songs, and dances. And Idols of Sama and Chakeva are made.
The Story of Sama And Chakeva
This dance is mainly performed in groups by females of a family. It tells the story of the loveable bond between brothers and sisters. The dance is performed like an act in which the story is narrated through the song.
This dance tells the story of Sama, a daughter of Krishna, who was turned into a bird by her father because of wrongdoing. But the love of her brother, Chakeva helped her turn back into the human form. This dance is not only performed on festivals but is also danced to raise awareness about the amazing regional festivals and rituals of the region.
Sama Chakeva Dance performance
There are no specific steps to this dance. Because the story told varies in different songs, the dance steps also vary. The performance is very energetic and alluring. There is no bound to the music or songs of this dance. Digital instruments and modern music are used in the songs of this dance.
Dance Costume
The attire for this dance is Ghagra-Choli and Chunni. The colors of the costume are very bright. The main attraction of the costume is the triangular hat on the top and also a Thaal (huge metal plate) that is carried by each performer.
Music For the Sama Chakwa Dance
The music for this dance is not restricted to the old instruments. One can find new tunes every year to groove on the occasion of Sama Chakeva.
